As the rains bathed the streets of Bangalore today evening, we all were rushing back home after the long day. But for a cow on Kanakpura Road, who would never again return to the warmth of home.
As I was riding back home today, I found a cow lying and groaning in pain(wounded in the back an head) in the middle of Kanakpura Main road, just a few yards after World City Apartments. A relentless queue of vehicles only gushed past her turning a deaf ear to her agony. Me and my friend stopped our bike on the other side of the divider to see if we could be of some help. It was barely anything that was in our capacity to do !
Sadly enough only 2 other people came to tell me that it was a mad cow and that I should not be helping her. I didn't get any help from anyone other than in an attempt to dragg the Cow to the side of the road where probably the sound of the horns and vehicles would not interrupt the trans in which she would gradually travel closer to God.
I wonder what has made us Humans so selfish these days to be able to bear to see another life in pain. So efficiently do we un-hear the grief and agony of these animals, of others !!!
I tried calling Cupa for helping and rescuing the cow... I was asked to call Karuna . So did I ... but only to get no response. I returned home and looked up animal helplines ... but to my greatest dismay ... none of the numbers worked!!!
I know not where and how she is now. The rains have stopped ... and I hope her suffering too...
Do we have any numbers (emergency rescue) for bangalore that we can rely on for prompt action(atleast willingness to act) in such scenarios in future ? Some Numbers that we can keep handy since such situations are increasingly frequent scenes these days ?

I know how you must be feeling ....because even I am not able to forget that moment when I stopped the bike and asked you to cross the road and see if we can do something! The most painful thing I have seen in quite sometime :-(
All I can say is ....I hope her suffering is over!
Be thankful to God that he has given us sense to feel other's pain !!
Yeah, but it feels worse when you can feel the pain and yet not do anything worthwhile !
CUPA has a large animal ambulance for the sole purpose of rescuing large animals. They HAVE to respond to this kind of a distress call. Please email me the day, time and other such details. If you know who you spoke to, it is even better. I am going to give a formal complaint.Be assured that I will take action. email me at claireyasmine@gmail.com
I had phoned cupa one night to come pick up an abandoned puppy hiding in the gutter. They came the next morning. Luckily he was still there.
I usually phone my vet if I come across an 'animal situation', and he advises me on what to do.
Here are some phone numbers that may be useful:
Animal Rights Fund: 5773 3445
CUPA: 2294 7300/01
Karuna: 2341 1181 / 2351 1329
People for animals: 2860 3986
Thanks Yasmine and Isabel. I would keep these numbers handy.
Simple answer: NONE of these organisations really work consistently. If you can possibly take the aninmal to a good vet yourself, do it. That's the best way.
Most shelters in Bangalore ignore emergaecies more often than not. Even when they do take an animal in, it is usually indiscriminately euthanised asap.
there is a cow shelter run by a jain organisation in koramangala. it's opposite to namdhari and on the national games village side of the road. the name of this cow shelter escapes my memory right now.
it is not easy to move a cow if we see them on the road like we'd move a pup or a kitten. that cow shelter's number is probably a handy one to have too..
also, i believe iskcon runs a cow shelter(i could be mistaken)...we could check and ask them too.
I know the place in Koramangala. Yasmine's interacted with them and has some disclaimers re: the ratio of pious intention vs. actual medical savvy, but I expect they can be of some use.
CUPA should be of great use in such situations. They have a large animal van. Karuna has none It's ridiculous what they did. Yasmine is following this up and I hope we see some results, but remember that CUPA is the organisation where, for every emergency you call any trustee about, the first reponse is 'have you considered having the animal put down?'
i am considering opening a hall of shame blog that will run alongside adoptstrays and catsofbangalore. these things must be exposed and recorded.
you can expect blog invitations, peeps.
its done.

please join and contribute.
The shelter in Koramangala is Prani Daya Sanga run by a person called Uttamchand Jain (i think). They have no ambulance and they rescue animals mainly from slaughterhouses. I think they have some tie-up with PFA but CUPA is the only NGO with a large animal ambulance. Ambulances for injured large animals are fitted with a hydraulic lift like structure so that the injured animal is not hauled into the ambulance. A vet is supposed to accompany the large animal amb and administer first aid/sedate/give a pain killer/euthanise the animal on the spot depending on the injury. I am waiting for a reply to a letter I sent to CUPA asking why no help was given to the cow on Kanakpura road.it the very least a vet should have gone there and given first aid till the ambulance could pick her up.
Hi... I just wanted to say that I saw a dog in pain today, and your post was useful for me to reach CUPA. The ambulance is out right now, but they are supposed to call me back when it comes in.
Thanks
